Why We Exist – Our Purpose, Our People, and Our Path Forward

Child-centred support, strengthened through whānau and community connection.

Kidz Social Services was founded to respond to a simple but urgent need: ensuring tamariki and rangatahi experiencing adversity could access child-centred, safe, and timely support. At the time, there were limited local services focused specifically on children, and too many young people were falling through the gaps – particularly those experiencing trauma, family harm, or involvement with statutory systems.

From the beginning, our focus has been on early intervention, accessibility, and safety. We believed then – as we do now – that children deserve support in environments where they feel understood, respected, and valued. Over the years, that belief has shaped not just what we do, but how we do it.

How Our Work Has Grown

As our work with children deepened, it became increasingly clear that lasting change does not happen in isolation. Tamariki do not exist separately from their whānau, schools, or wider communities. Their wellbeing is closely connected to the wellbeing of the adults and systems around them.

In response, our services have grown organically to support not only children, but also parents, caregivers, and individuals – while remaining firmly grounded in a child-centred, whānau-focused approach. This growth has never been driven by organisational ambition, but by community need. Families, schools, and partner agencies consistently sought more holistic support, and we responded in ways that complement existing services rather than replace them.

Importantly, we are intentional about not becoming a “one-stop shop.” We believe the best outcomes for whānau are achieved when organisations work together, recognising that no single service can meet every need. Collaboration, trust, and shared responsibility sit at the heart of our approach.

What We Do Today

Today, Kidz Social Services delivers a range of services that support wellbeing across the lifespan, including:

  • Counselling for children, young people, and adults
  • Counselling in primary schools
  • ACC Sensitive Claims counselling
  • Supervised Contact services
  • Mentoring and placement opportunities for student counsellors
  • Staff and community professional development

Alongside service delivery, we place strong value on sector development. By opening training opportunities to other community organisations, hosting workshops, and supporting student counsellors into practice, we contribute to building a stronger, more connected local workforce. More information on our services can be found here.

Where We Are Heading

We are entering a period of planned and deliberate growth. This includes strengthening governance capability, supporting leadership development, and preparing for a future transition into a larger, fit-for-purpose premises that will allow us to bring services together, expand what we offer, and deliver training onsite.

Our intended outcomes are clear:

  • Tamariki and rangatahi have earlier access to support and improved wellbeing
  • Whānau are better supported and more connected
  • Services are accessible, coordinated, and sustainable
  • The local social services sector is stronger, more skilled, and more collaborative
  • Our community is more resilient, connected, and supported

As we continue to evolve, our purpose remains unchanged. We are here to support children and whānau, respond to community need, and work alongside others to create lasting, positive change.
